TOP brook trout ponds for the 2014 ice fishing season in Washington County, Maine

For the purpose of this blog, I’ll define a brook trout pond as a body of water less than 50 acres in size which is stocked in the fall with hatchery-reared brook trout to support ice fishing.  These small ponds freeze over early in the season and are typically safe to fish several weeks before the bigger lakes become accessible.  This provides a real opportunity for hot early-season action for those of us (myself included!) who just can’t wait to catch brookies through the ice.

The TOP brook trout ponds for the 2014 ice fishing season in Washington County are highlighted below (in alphabetical order).  A pond is considered “top” based on its stocking density: the more trout are stocked per acre, the higher the chances of catching them.

Fishing for landlocked Atlantic salmon in Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park is a major jewel in the National Park Service crown. It is located on Mount Desert Island along the rugged coast of Downeast Maine in Hancock County. The State stocks four ponds within the boundary of the Park with landlocked Atlantic salmon. These four water bodies are open to year-round fishing. However, keep in mind that these fisheries are highly regulated in order to preserve their exceptional quality, the scenic beauty, and the Park experience. It is greatly recommended to carefully read the latest fishing regulations in order to understand all of the restrictions and limitations that apply to these bodies of water. Only when the water is relatively cool in the spring can salmon be caught near the surface using dry flies and trolling with live bait, spoons, or wet flies. Most summer visitors to the Park interested in pursuing these magnificent creatures will need to use downriggers or lead-core line in order to place their lures in the deeper, colder waters below the thermocline where the salmon will be hiding. Trout fishing on Stanley Pond, Hiram, Maine (March 10, 2013)

Stanley Pond is a three-lobed, 137-acre body of water located next to Route 160 in Hiram, Oxford County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 4 C2). It is accessible via the boat launch located next to the outlet on Tripptown Road off Route 160. Click here for a depth map and more fisheries information. This pond has a reputation for growing big rainbow trout. It was also stocked last fall with larger trout (click here for details). My son Joel and I will icefish it for the first time today in an attempt to catch one of the big ones. We reach the boat launch by the outlet dam located on the lower lobe of Stanley Pond at 7:25 am. We’re anxious about the ice conditions because it rained heavily five days earlier, followed by relatively balmy daytime temperatures in the mid 40’s. Fortunately, the hard freeze over the last several nights has solidified the slush into 6” of soft ice on top of 9” of black ice. We’re good to go because the ice along the shoreline is also solid. The day promises to be beautiful: full sunshine, no wind, and temps in the low 40’s.

Trout fishing on Norton Pond, Lincolnville, Maine (February 24, 2013)

Norton Pond is an 112-acre body of water located in Lincolnville, Waldo County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 14 C3). This pond is accessed via the public boat launch on Norton Pond Road off Maine Street (Route 52). Click here for a depth map and more fisheries information. I’m fishing this pond today, even though it is located close to 100 miles from where I live in southern Maine, because the state stocked it exceptionally well in the fall of 2012 with five-pound brood stock rainbow trout. Click here for more details on this topic.  I’d love to emulate my luck from two weeks earlier on Knickerbocker Pond when I caught a nice rainbow trout.

Trout fishing on Cold Rain Pond, Naples, Maine (February 18, 2013)

Cold Rain Pond is a pretty and isolated 38-acre body of water located in Naples, Maine (see the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 4 B5).  Click here a description of this pond and the directions to it.  Click here for a depth map and more fisheries information. Access to the pond in the winter is either on foot or by snow mobile because Tiger Hill Road is groomed as a snow mobile trail. A plowed parking area is located at the intersection of Kimball Corner Road and Tiger Hill Road. The state of Maine stocked the pond with 16 brook trout per acre in the fall of 2012 for the 2013 ice fishing season.  These fish are the target of our attention today.
