Ice fishing for brook trout on Silver Lake in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine (January 27, 2024)

Most of the brookies I catch this morning are of this modest size.

Silver Lake is a 12-acre body of water located right next to the ocean in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 6 E5). If you are quiet and listen attentively when on the ice, you can hear the waves crashing on the nearby beach! To reach this location, drive on Route 209 from Bath and pass Popham Beach State Park. The pond will appear within less than a mile from the entrance of the park. Just before reaching the southern tip of the pond, turn right on Hunnewell Avenue, which is a gravel road that splits off from Route 209. Drive 200-300 ft. on this road and leave your vehicle on the side. The access point will be to your left. Keep in mind that parking space is limited to a handful of vehicles (note: no parking is available or allowed on Route 209) and may also be a problem after a snowstorm.

The access point is at the southern tip of the pond. Route 209 is hidden behind the trees in the background.

Silver Lake is a pretty 12-acre body of water located within spitting distance of the Atlantic Ocean in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 6 E5; note that the lake is shown on the map but is not specifically named). To reach this location, drive on Route 209 from Bath and pass Popham Beach State Park. The pond will appear within about half a mile from the entrance of the park. Just before reaching the southern tip of the pond, turn right on Hunnewell Avenue, which is a gravel road that splits off from Route 209. Drive 200-300 ft. on this road and leave your vehicle on the side. The access point will be to your left. The first trout of the morning is a real beauty!

Silver Lake covers 12 acres and is located next to the ocean in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 6 E5; note that the lake is shown on the map but is not specifically named). To reach this pond, drive on Route 209 from Bath towards Popham Beach State Park. Pass the state park entrance and drive for another 0.5 miles. Turn right on Hunnewell Avenue just before reaching the pond. You can park your vehicle on the left side about 200 ft further down that road. I do not know what the parking situation would be on Hunnewell Avenue after a snow storm when the road has been plowed and the narrow shoulder is filled with snow.

General View of Silver Lake. Note the gloomy sky and the glare ice.

Silver Lake covers 12 acres and is located in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 6 E5; note that the lake is shown on the map but is not specifically named). To reach this pond, drive on Route 209 from Bath towards Popham Beach State Park. Pass the state park entrance and drive for another 0.5 miles. The pond will be visible on your right from the road. Keep in mind that parking in this general area is tricky. I found no place to leave a vehicle behind on Route 209 across from the pond. Instead, your best option is to turn right on Hunnewell Avenue just before reaching the pond. A vehicle could be parked at that split, or further down that road. I do not know what the parking situation would be on Hunnewell Avenue after a snow storm. We’ve had several warm days before today so that a lot of snow has melted, allowing me to park tight against the remaining snow banks without obstructing local traffic.

General view of Wat-Tuh Lake

Wat-Tuh Lake is a 26-acre body of water located right next to the ocean in Phippsburg, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 6 D4). This pond can be reached by driving down Sebasco Road and right through the Sebasco Harbor Resort (including its golf course) located at the southwestern end of the pond. Once in the resort, turn right on Pine Drive which goes over a berm separating the pond from the adjoining sea. The rough access point to the pond is located on the right at the end of this berm. Beware that it can only accommodate small hand-carried craft such as a canoe or kayak. Parking is along the weedy side of the berm. GoogleMaps shows that Pine Drive can also be reached from the north but I did not try out that route. A second rough access point is also present at the northern tip of the pond next to Sebasco Road.
