This blog identifies the ponds in Cumberland County, Maine that provide the best odds of catching brook trout during the spring of 2014. Most of these ponds cover less than 50 acres and are therefore relatively small. Some ponds can be fished from shore, but most are best fished from a canoe or other small craft. The action on these bodies of water can be fast and furious in the spring. Trout activity typically peaks between late April and early June, after which the fishing slows down in response to rising surface water temperatures.
The TOP 5 brook trout ponds in Cumberland County for the spring of 2014 are highlighted below in alphabetical order. A pond is considered TOP due to its trout stocking density: after all, everything else being equal, the more brook trout that are stocked per acre of pond, the greater the chances of catching those fish.
Some ponds were stocked in the fall of 2013 but were closed to ice fishing. Others are stocked once early in the spring or may be stocked several times in April and May. Beaver Pond covers 4 acres and is located behind the Saccarappa Cemetery next to Spring Street and East Valentine Street in Westbrook (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 74 C1, Westbrook). This pond is stocked in the spring with an average of 50 brook trout per acre. The stocked trout measure about 10”.

Chaffin Pond covers 13 acres and is located off Route 302 (just south of Anglers Road) in Windham (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 5 C2). Directions on how to reach this water body are available at amazingfishametric.com/blog/?p=1493.This pond, which is closed to ice fishing, is stocked in the spring with an average of 15 brook trout per acre. The stocked trout measure about 10”.

Otter Pond #2 covers 12 acres and is located off Route 35 in Standish (see the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 5 D1). This pond is stocked in the spring with an average of 38 brook trout per acre. The stocked trout measure about 10”. The State also spices up this pond with an average of thirty 16” to 18” brook trout (about 2.5 large trout per acre). Otter Pond #2 provides one of the best odds of catching a lunker fish in the spring in this part of the state.

Otter Pond #4 (a.k.a. Snake Pond) covers 6 acres and is also located off Route 35 in Standish (see the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 5 D1). Pineland Pond covers 1 acre and is located right next to Route 231 by Pineland Farms in New Gloucester (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 5 C4, although the pond itself is not shown on the map). Check this blog for more information (amazingfishametric.com/blog/?p=1227). This pond is stocked in the spring with a total of 350 brook trout per acre! The stocked trout measure about 10”. Note that the entire shoreline of Pineland Pond is free of trees and bushes, which makes it an ideal location for beginners to practice their fly-fishing skills.

How long ago was this report on Beaver Pond in Westbrook written? There are nothing but apartment homes and houses in that area!
One access point onto Beaver Pond is located at the end of Church Street, located off Route 25 in Westbrook (see the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 74 C1 [Westbrook]). Note that only hand-carried craft can be carried in that way. Good luck with the fishing.
